Goose Island State Park

Visitors come from near and far to Goose Island State Park for a great camping experience, excellent bird watching, and fabulous fishing. This area is perfect for nature lovers and avid photographers seeking the ideal wildlife backgrounds. The area is known for oyster shell, mud flat and marsh grass, perfect for those that don’t mind getting a little dirty in search of fun.

Open seven days a week, all year-round, Goose Island State Park opens the gates at 8 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. This park is a popular destination for visitors with the busiest seasons being Memorial Day through Labor Day, October through Thanksgiving as well as January through April.

Activities

Camping

Take your pick of walk-in campsites for tent camping, campsites with water and electricity, and the premium campsites with water and electricity that also afford you shaded shelter, picnic areas, and grills along the Bayfront area. Restrooms are nearby all campsites. Use your Texas State Park Pass for year-round visits to over 90 parks in Texas, including Goose Island State Park.

Bird Watching

Located on the southern tip of Lamar Peninsula, Goose Island State Park is ideal for bird watchers, with over 300 species in the area. It is perfect for nature lovers who appreciate natural scenery and those that enjoy observing wildlife in its natural habitat. See the endangered whooping crane feeding on berries and blue crab. Plant life here includes the American beautyberry, wax myrtle, and bushy saltgrass plus more.

Fishing

The main activities available at Goose Island State Park include bird watching, nature study, and fishing for red drum, flounder, and speckled trout. There is a “Tackle Loaner Program” available where you can use fishing rods and tackle boxes for your fishing excursion. With the park’s Angler Education, you can learn something new and add to your fishing skills!

Know Before You Go

When visiting Goose Island State Park stop by the “Big Tree”, thought to be one of the largest in the nation since 1969. There is no swimming area for Goose Island and pets are leash permitted. Bring plenty of bottled water and sunscreen because this is Texas after all. Check out Goose Island’s calendar of events for activities that the entire family will enjoy.
